What Is Granite
A Natural Stone Built to Last a Lifetime
Granite is a natural igneous stone formed when magma cools slowly deep underground, producing interlocking crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica. It is one of the most durable countertop materials available, highly resistant to heat and everyday scratching, and every slab carries a pattern found nowhere else on earth. Berry Marble and Granite fabricates and installs granite countertops across Tyler and East Texas with NSI-accredited precision, cutting each slab on our robotic saw to fit your space exactly.
The Material
Where Granite Comes From and Why It Performs
Formed over millions of years, quarried in massive blocks, and cut into slabs that carry the record of that process in every crystal.
How It Forms
Granite forms deep underground as magma cools slowly over millions of years. That gradual process produces tightly interlocked crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica, which is what gives granite its characteristic hardness and its speckled, mineral-rich appearance.
Natural Variation
No two granite slabs are identical. The mineral composition shifts from quarry to quarry and even within a single block, producing the unique speckled patterns, flowing veins, and color movement that make granite a genuinely one-of-a-kind surface in your home.
From Quarry to Tyler
Granite is quarried in large blocks, then sawn into slabs and finished to various surface textures. Those slabs arrive at Berry’s Tyler slab yard, where you walk the inventory, choose the exact stone going into your home, and buy only what your job actually uses.
Honest Assessment
Granite Strengths and Limitations
Every material has trade-offs. Here is a straight look at what granite does well and what it asks of you.
Strengths
- Extremely hard surface, resists everyday scratching from knives and cookware
- Heat-tolerant, handles hot pots and pans better than most countertop materials
- Unique natural appearance, no two slabs are the same
- Long lifespan, properly maintained granite can last the lifetime of the home
- Adds measurable resale value to kitchens and bathrooms
Limitations
- Porous by nature, requires periodic sealing to resist staining (annual sealing recommended)
- Heavy material, cabinets must be structurally sound to support the weight
- Natural variation means the slab you select is the slab you get, not a predictable pattern
- Avoid harsh acidic cleaners such as vinegar or citrus-based products
- Falls in the mid to upper price range relative to engineered stone, though lower than most quartzite and marble

Common Questions
Granite Countertop FAQ
Does granite need to be sealed?
Yes. Granite is a porous natural stone, so it benefits from sealing to resist staining from oils, liquids, and acidic foods. For most kitchens, sealing once a year is sufficient. Denser granite varieties may need it less frequently. Berry seals your countertops at install, and we can walk you through the ongoing care routine before we leave.
Is granite heat resistant?
Yes. Granite handles hot pots and pans better than most countertop materials, including engineered quartz, which can discolor from direct heat. Because granite formed under extreme heat underground, brief contact with a hot pan will not damage the stone. That said, using a trivet is still a good habit to protect the sealant and the finish over time.
Will granite scratch?
Granite is one of the hardest countertop surfaces available and resists everyday scratching from knives, keys, and cookware. In fact, cutting directly on granite will dull your knives before it marks the stone. For the sake of your blades and your sealant, a cutting board is still the right call.
How long does granite last?
Properly maintained granite countertops can last the lifetime of the home. The stone itself does not wear out. With routine sealing and basic care, granite installed today will still be performing decades from now. It is one of the reasons granite consistently adds resale value to kitchens and bathrooms.
How much does granite cost?
Granite falls in the mid to upper price range among countertop materials. What shapes the final number is the stone you choose, the size of your project, the edge profile, and the complexity of the layout. At Berry, you pay only for the stone your job actually uses, not the whole slab, which keeps real projects more affordable without cutting corners on material or craft.
